Renaissance Choir Concert, ‘Taverner to Tavener’

Burnished Gold.

Taverner to Tavener.  It’s not a misprint. It’s the names of two of the UK’s greatest choral composers
separated by about 500 years, and an extra ‘R’ in the name of the earlier one.  The fabulous
Renaissance Choir presents a concert featuring these two musical giants on Saturday, 28th
March at 7.30pm, at St Faith’s Church, Lee-on-the-Solent.

Amongst the pieces to be heard are Tavener’s The Lamb, and Song for Athene which became
famous after Princess Diana’s funeral.

John Tavener (born 1944) writes with a pen of burnished gold, producing sensuous sounds in the
style of the Greek and Russian Orthodox Church.  Imagine those beautiful Russian Ikon images of
Mary and Jesus – that’s Tavener’s musical style.

John Taverner (1490 -1545) is one of England’s greatest hidden gems. He writes in a similar style
to Tallis, using long phrases of complex beauty.  His music is music for contemplation, for relaxation,
for wonder and for peace.

The Renaissance Choir is renowned for its sensuous sound and for tackling some of the most
difficult challenges in the repertoire.  It has been likened to its professional counterpart, The Sixteen.

Joining the choir for this programme is cellist Katy Wright.  Katy has worked with many of the world’s
finest musicians and is a rising star well-worth catching in a local concert. She will play two of J. S.
Bach’s suites for unaccompanied cello and join the Renaissance Choir in a performance of
Tavener’s Svyati.

Tickets for the concert are available from our website www.renaissancechoir.org.uk or telephone
02392 591462, or at the door.
Scene from last year’s family-friendly Stokes Bay Festival.
