ABOUT MENINGITIS
Early signs and symptoms are similar to cold
and 'flu. There is NOT always a rash. It can
happen to anyone – adults included.
Signs & Symptoms
Babies & adults
fever, cold hands and feet
floppy, listless, unresponsive
refusing food
vomiting
drowsy, difficult to wake
pale, blotchy skin
fretful, dislike being handled
dislike to bright lights
spots/rash
unusual cry or moaning
rapid breathing or grunting
Children & adults
stomach cramps and diarrhoea
stiff neck
fever,cold hands and feet
vomiting
drowsy, difficult to wake
severe headache
confusion, irritability
severe muscle pain
dislike to bright lights
spots/rash
What to do if you suspect meningitis
1. Contact you GP immediately. If your GP is
not available, go straight to your nearest
accident and emergency department
2. If you have seen a doctor but are still
worried, call the FREE 24-hour nurse-led
helpline operated by the Meningitis Trust on
0800 028 1828
